About Terry Porter
Portland found its floor general where nobody was looking: NAIA Wisconsin-Stevens Point, where Terry Porter was a two-time First-Team All-American before the Trail Blazers took him 24th overall in the 1985 draft. By 1987-88 the point guard was dishing 10.1 assists per game - still the only double-digit assist season in franchise history - and in 1988-89, while this card sat in packs, he averaged 17.7 points and 9.5 assists as Portland's engine. Porter steered the Blazers to NBA Finals runs in 1990 and 1992, earned All-Star nods in 1991 and 1993, and won the 1993 J. Walter Kennedy Citizenship Award. Ten Portland seasons left him the franchise's all-time assists leader at 5,319, with his No. 30 hanging in the rafters; later stops in Minnesota, Miami, and San Antonio stretched his career to 17 years, 15,586 points, and 7,160 assists. Card #96 isn't a rookie card - it catches a small-school underdog in full breakout.
