About Steve Stipanovich

By the time Fleer printed card #59, Steve Stipanovich's career was already over — knee problems kept him off the floor for all of 1988-89, and he retired at 27. "Stipo," the natural shorthand for his surname, starred at Missouri under Norm Stewart, teaming with Jon Sundvold on four straight Big Eight championship clubs and earning consensus second-team All-America honors in 1983 — a senior season capped by a 27-point, 12-rebound, five-block upset of Ralph Sampson's No. 1 Virginia. The Pacers took the 6'11" center second overall in the 1983 draft, right behind Sampson, still the highest any Missouri player has ever been picked. An All-Rookie First Team pick in 1984, he gave Indiana five durable seasons in the middle — 13.2 points and 7.8 rebounds per game, 5,323 points and 3,131 boards in all. Not a rookie card, this is instead his farewell issue; Mizzou retired his No. 40.
