1988-89 Fleer #108 Xavier McDaniel

About Xavier McDaniel
Seattle grabbed Xavier McDaniel fourth overall in 1985 after he closed his Wichita State career with a feat nobody had managed: leading the NCAA in both scoring (27.4) and rebounding (15.0) in the same season. The shaved-head, shaved-eyebrows enforcer — "the X-Man," a nickname dating to his A.C. Flora High barbershop crew back in Columbia, South Carolina — was an instant starter, earning 1985-86 All-Rookie First Team honors and finishing runner-up to Patrick Ewing for Rookie of the Year. This Fleer issue (not a rookie card) lands right on the heels of his lone All-Star season, 1987-88, when he averaged 21.4 points for the Sonics. He topped 20 a game again in 1988-89 largely as a sixth man, then took his physical brand of forward play to Phoenix, Pat Riley's Knicks — where he famously battled Scottie Pippen in the 1992 playoffs — Boston, and New Jersey, retiring in 1998 with 13,606 points over 12 NBA seasons.
