1988-89 Fleer #110 Nate McMillan

About Nate McMillan
Seattle grabbed Nate McMillan 30th overall in the 1986 draft out of NC State, where the Raleigh native played for Jim Valvano after two years at Chowan College, and he never wore another NBA uniform. Across twelve seasons (1986-98) at point and shooting guard, "Mr. Sonic" — the nickname earned by 19 years of service to the franchise as player and then coach — piled up 4,893 assists and 1,544 steals against just 4,733 points, the classic glue-guy ledger. He still shares the NBA rookie record of 25 assists in a single game, led the league in steals per game in 1993-94, made back-to-back All-Defensive Second Teams (1994, 1995), and helped the Sonics reach the 1996 Finals against Jordan's Bulls — Seattle beat Chicago three times that season, something no other team managed. Not a rookie card, this Fleer issue captures the Sonics' defensive heartbeat early in his run. Seattle retired his No. 10, and he later head-coached the Sonics, Blazers, Pacers, and Hawks.
