About Thurl Bailey
Thurl Bailey arrived in Utah with a champion's pedigree, having anchored Jim Valvano's NC State squad during its miracle run to the 1983 NCAA title before the Jazz took him seventh overall that June. The 6'11" forward earned All-Rookie First Team honors in 1983-84, then settled into one of the era's great sixth-man roles once Karl Malone arrived — averaging 19.6 points in 1987-88 and 19.5 in 1988-89, finishing runner-up for Sixth Man of the Year both seasons. Known as "Big T," a nickname he picked up during his playing days and later attached to his production company, Bailey logged 12 NBA seasons with Utah and Minnesota (1983-99), retiring with 11,834 points and 1,086 blocks. This Fleer card — not a rookie, as he was a six-year veteran by 1988 — catches him at his scoring peak. Off the court he became a Jazz broadcaster and recording artist, one of the hobby's genuine renaissance men.
