1988-89 Fleer #114 Karl Malone

About Karl Malone
Twelve teams passed on the Louisiana Tech star before Utah grabbed him 13th overall in the 1985 draft — Malone had even rented a Dallas apartment expecting the Mavericks at No. 8 — and every one of them regretted it. "The Mailman," a nickname coined by Teddy Allen of Louisiana Tech's sports information office for the alliteration of "Mailman Malone," delivered for 18 seasons at power forward for the Jazz (1985-2003) plus one Lakers farewell (2003-04): 36,928 points (third all-time), 14 All-Star selections, 11 All-NBA First Teams, MVP awards in 1997 and 1999, All-Star Game MVPs in 1989 and 1993, and Olympic gold in 1992 and 1996. Alongside John Stockton he reached the Finals in 1997 and 1998, adding a third trip with the 2004 Lakers, but never a ring. This #114 is not a rookie card — Fleer catches him mid-breakout, entering a 29.1-point 1988-89 season and his first All-NBA First Team — and the Naismith Hall called in 2010.
