1988-89 Fleer #18 Charles Oakley

About Charles Oakley
Card #18 catches Charles Oakley in his first season at Madison Square Garden — and no, this isn't his rookie card; by 1988-89 the fourth-year forward was already a proven rebounding machine. A Cleveland kid who starred at Division II Virginia Union, Oakley went ninth overall to the Cavaliers in 1985, but his rights were dealt to Chicago, where he made the 1986 All-Rookie First Team and served as Michael Jordan's enforcer. The Bulls shipped him to New York for Bill Cartwright in 1988, and "Oak Tree" — a nickname earned for his rugged demeanor and no-nonsense attitude — anchored the Knicks' frontcourt for a decade, earning his lone All-Star nod and All-Defensive First Team honors in 1994 while battling to the NBA Finals that spring. He hung around 19 seasons through Toronto, Washington, and Houston, retiring with 12,417 points and 12,205 rebounds. His 35-rebound outburst late in the 1987-88 season remains the most in any NBA game since 1979.
