About Bernard King

By the time Fleer's 1988-89 set caught Bernard King in Bullets colors, collectors were watching one of basketball's great comeback stories unfold. Half of Tennessee's famed "Ernie and Bernie Show" with Ernie Grunfeld, King went seventh overall to the Nets in 1977 and blossomed into a ferocious scoring small forward: four All-Star selections, four All-NBA teams, a 60-point Christmas Day eruption in 1984, and the 1984-85 scoring title at 32.9 points per game with the Knicks. A shredded right knee in March 1985 nearly ended everything, but King rebuilt himself in Washington — 20.7 a game in 1988-89 behind his famous "game face" — and in 1991 became the first player to return from a torn ACL and make an All-Star team. He retired in 1993 with 19,655 points (22.5 per game) and entered the Naismith Hall of Fame in 2013. Card #116 is a veteran issue, not a rookie card.
