About Jeff Malone

Few late-'80s shooting guards were smoother from mid-range than Jeff Malone, Washington's silky scorer on card #117. SEC Player of the Year at Mississippi State, Malone went 10th overall to the Bullets in the 1983 draft, earned All-Rookie First Team honors, and delivered one of the wildest buzzer-beaters ever that January — the "Maryland Miracle," an off-balance three launched while falling out of bounds behind the backboard to sink Detroit. Back-to-back All-Star nods came in 1986 and 1987, and he peaked at 24.3 points per game in 1989-90 before a trade to Utah, where he ran alongside John Stockton and the unrelated Karl Malone. Stops in Philadelphia and Miami closed out a 13-year career: 17,231 points, a 19.0 average, and .871 free-throw shooting. This isn't his rookie card — Malone was a five-year veteran when it hit packs — but it's a classic Bullets-era Fleer of one of the era's purest jump shooters.
