About Moses Malone

Moses Malone skipped college entirely — the Utah Stars grabbed the Petersburg, Virginia high schooler in the third round of the 1974 ABA Draft, making him modern pro basketball's first prep-to-pro player. The 6-10 center became a force in Houston, then carried Philadelphia to the 1983 NBA championship while sweeping regular-season and Finals MVP honors. Nicknamed "Chairman of the Boards" for his relentless work on the glass, Malone won three MVP awards (1979, 1982, 1983), made twelve straight NBA All-Star teams (1978-89), led the league in rebounding six times, and retired with 29,580 combined ABA/NBA points and 17,834 rebounds. This Fleer card catches him newly signed with Atlanta as a free agent, where he posted 20.2 points and 11.8 boards a night in 1988-89 and earned that twelfth and final All-Star nod. It's no rookie card — he'd been a pro since 1974 — but it belongs to an all-timer: the Naismith Hall called in 2001, his first year of eligibility.
