About Spud Webb

One of the shortest players in NBA history, Spud Webb turned a 42-inch vertical into twelve NBA seasons and living proof that hops beat height. Nicknamed as a newborn when a hospital visitor said his round head resembled the Sputnik satellite — "Sputnik" quickly shortened to "Spud" — the Dallas point guard led Midland College to the 1982 junior college national title, then ran Jim Valvano's offense at NC State. Detroit drafted him 87th overall in 1985 and cut him before the preseason; a tryout with Atlanta stuck, and he manned the Hawks' backcourt through 1991 before stops in Sacramento, a Hawks return, Minnesota, and Orlando through 1998. His legend was minted at the 1986 Slam Dunk Contest in his hometown Dallas, where the 5-foot-7 guard beat teammate and defending champion Dominique Wilkins with two perfect 50s in the final round. He retired with 8,072 points and 4,342 assists. Not a rookie card — Webb had debuted in October 1985 — but a hobby icon all the same.
