About Doc Rivers

Glenn 'Doc' Rivers picked up his nickname at a Marquette summer camp, where he arrived wearing a 'Dr. J' Julius Erving t-shirt and the staff pinned the name on him. A 6-foot-4 point guard, he starred at Marquette before the Atlanta Hawks grabbed him in the second round (31st overall) of the 1983 NBA Draft. Rivers ran Atlanta's offense from 1983 to 1991 — averaging 12.8 points and 10.0 assists in 1986-87 and earning his lone All-Star nod in 1988, the season before this card — and he sits atop the Hawks' all-time assist list at 3,866. Later stops with the Clippers, Knicks, and Spurs (1991-96) closed a career of 10.9 points and 5.7 assists per game, plus the 1990 J. Walter Kennedy Citizenship Award. Card #3 is not his rookie; that's the 1986-87 Fleer #91. Rivers reached the Naismith Hall of Fame with the Class of 2026, inducted as a coach for a sideline career that brought 2000 Coach of the Year honors and the Celtics' 2008 championship.
