About Kevin Willis
Plucked 11th overall by Atlanta out of Michigan State in the fabled 1984 draft — the class of Olajuwon, Jordan, and Barkley — Kevin Willis turned a skinny seven-foot frame into two decades of punishing work on the glass. This Fleer issue is no rookie card, and it carries a quirk collectors love: Willis never played in 1988-89, sitting out the entire season injured before returning to anchor Atlanta's front line. His peak came in 1991-92 — 18.3 points, a career-high 15.5 rebounds a night, his lone All-Star selection, and All-NBA Third Team honors. The big man rolled on through Miami, Golden State, Houston, Toronto, and Denver, grabbed a ring with the 2003 Spurs at age 40, and closed with a 2007 Dallas cameo at 44 as the oldest player in NBA history. The ledger: 17,523 points, 11,901 rebounds, 1,424 games across 21 seasons. Fittingly for a fashion-and-textiles major, he later built a big-and-tall clothing business.
