1988-89 Fleer #91 Mark West

About Mark West
By the time Fleer got around to Mark West, the Old Dominion big man was already a five-year pro — making card #91 his rookie card, and in fresh Phoenix Suns colors after a midseason 1987-88 trade from Cleveland. A three-time All-American who twice led the nation in blocked shots, West went 30th overall to Dallas in the 1983 draft and hammered out a 17-season, 1,090-game career at center for seven franchises. Phoenix got his best: all 82 games at a sizzling .653 field-goal percentage in 1988-89, then anchor duty on the 1992-93 Suns that battled Chicago in the NBA Finals. He retired in 2000 with 6,259 points, 5,347 rebounds, 1,403 blocks, and a .580 career field-goal percentage that still ranks third all-time behind only Artis Gilmore and Shaquille O'Neal. Old Dominion retired his No. 45, and the Suns later brought him back as assistant general manager and assistant coach.
