About Armon Gilliam

Armon Gilliam — who later respelled his first name Armen — muscled his way from Independence Junior College to UNLV, powering a 93-11 Runnin' Rebels run, setting a school record with 998 points as a senior, and making the 1987 Final Four all-tournament team. Phoenix grabbed the burly power forward second overall in the 1987 draft, and he answered with an All-Rookie First Team season. Card #89 in 1988-89 Fleer is his rookie card, arriving as he pushed to 15.9 points and 7.3 boards a night in year two with the Suns. UNLV teammate Frank James dubbed him "The Hammer" for those biceps and his pounding work under the basket — Gilliam figured his steel-town Pittsburgh roots factored in too. Across 13 NBA seasons with the Suns, Hornets, 76ers, Nets, Bucks and Jazz he banked 12,700 points and 6,401 rebounds, plus 1986 World Championship gold with Team USA. UNLV retired his No. 35; he passed away in 2011 at just 47.
