About Buck Williams
Charles Linwood Williams picked up "Buck" as a boy in Rocky Mount, North Carolina — a family friend declared the kid "as big as a buck," and the name stuck for good. He starred at Maryland, winning 1979 ACC Rookie of the Year honors and making the boycotted 1980 U.S. Olympic team, then went third overall to the New Jersey Nets in the 1981 draft. He was 1982 NBA Rookie of the Year, a three-time All-Star (1982, 1983, 1986), All-NBA Second Team in 1983, and a four-time All-Defensive selection. No rookie card here — Fleer catches the goggled rebounding machine in 1988-89, his final Nets season before the June 1989 trade to Portland for Sam Bowie that set up Finals runs in 1990 and 1992. He closed out with the Knicks in 1998, finishing with 16,784 points, 13,017 rebounds, and a .549 field-goal percentage; the Nets retired his No. 52, and he still owns their franchise rebounding record.
