1988-89 Fleer #102 Walter Berry

About Walter Berry
Harlem crowned Walter Berry "The Truth" on its playgrounds — a name given out of respect years before Paul Pierce carried it — and by 1986 the whole country believed. After a junior-college national title at San Jacinto, the 6-8 lefty forward swept college basketball's top honors at St. John's, claiming the 1986 Wooden Award and AP Player of the Year while averaging 23.0 points and 11.1 rebounds, a season after helping the Redmen to the 1985 Final Four. Portland drafted him 14th overall in 1986 but dealt him to San Antonio for Kevin Duckworth just seven games in; Berry answered with back-to-back 17-point seasons for the Spurs. An August 1988 trade brought him home to the Nets — the uniform on this, his rookie card — before a midseason move to Houston closed his 205-game NBA run at 14.1 points per game. A decorated European second act followed: two Greek League titles with Olympiacos and a 2022 Greek League Hall of Fame induction.
