About Brad Daugherty
The first overall pick of the 1986 NBA Draft, Brad Daugherty arrived in Cleveland out of Dean Smith's North Carolina program, where the 7-footer was twice first-team All-ACC and an All-American in 1986. The Cavaliers dealt Roy Hinson to Philadelphia for the pick, then surrounded Daugherty with fellow rookies Ron Harper and Mark Price — a young core that made Cleveland an Eastern Conference power. By the time this card — not a rookie — reached packs, the skilled center was already an All-Star, the first of five selections (1988, 1989, 1991–93), and he added All-NBA Third Team honors in 1992 while carrying the Cavs to that spring's Eastern Conference Finals. Chronic back trouble forced him out at just 28, but he retired averaging 19.0 points and 9.5 rebounds, with franchise records of 10,389 points and 5,227 boards that stood until 2008. Cleveland retired his No. 43, a number he chose in tribute to NASCAR legend Richard Petty.
