1988-89 Fleer #23 Ron Harper

About Ron Harper
A Dayton, Ohio native who left Miami University as its all-time leading scorer (2,377 points) and a two-time MAC Player of the Year, Ron Harper went eighth overall to Cleveland in the 1986 NBA Draft and delivered immediately — 22.9 points per game, All-Rookie First Team honors, and a runner-up finish for Rookie of the Year. Sportswriters dubbed the high-flying guard the "Ohio Flyer," and this card catches him near his athletic peak: in 1988-89 he started all 82 games at 18.6 points and 5.3 assists for a Cavaliers squad whose season ended on Michael Jordan's famous "Shot" at Richfield Coliseum. It's his second-year Fleer issue, not a rookie — his lone RC came in 1987-88 Fleer. Dealt to the Clippers in November 1989, Harper later remade himself into a defensive stopper, collecting five championships — three with the 1996-98 Bulls, two with the 2000-01 Lakers — before retiring in 2001 with 13,910 career points over 1,009 games.
