About Kenny Smith
Fleer handed Kenny Smith his rookie card at #100 — then botched the one fact any Tar Heel fan could recite, listing his college as North Carolina State on the back. Smith played at North Carolina, running Dean Smith's offense alongside Michael Jordan as a freshman and earning consensus first-team All-American honors in 1987. Fleer never corrected the error, which only adds character. Nicknamed "The Jet" after a New York sportswriter watched the Archbishop Molloy High guard race up the court "like a jet," Smith went sixth overall to Sacramento in the 1987 draft and made the All-Rookie First Team. The season on this card was his best in a Kings uniform: 17.3 points and 7.7 assists a night. By 1990-91 the point guard had landed in Houston, where he started for back-to-back champions in 1994 and 1995. He retired in 1997 — six teams, 9,397 points, 4,073 assists — and became a fixture on TNT's Inside the NBA.
