About Alex English

Alex English arrived quietly — a second-round pick, 23rd overall, by Milwaukee in 1976 after a school-record 1,972 points at South Carolina — and left as the NBA's leading scorer of the entire 1980s. Buried on the Bucks' bench, then a starter in Indiana, the silky small forward found home when Denver acquired him for George McGinnis midway through 1979-80. He reeled off eight straight All-Star seasons (1982-89), three All-NBA Second Team nods, and the 1982-83 scoring title at 28.4 a game, piling up 25,613 career points on a feathery mid-range jumper so smooth and razor-precise it earned him the nickname "The Blade." An English major with a passion for poetry, he also took home the 1988 J. Walter Kennedy Citizenship Award. This isn't a rookie card — by 1988-89 he was a 35-year-old All-Star still scoring 26.5 a night. Denver retired his No. 2 in 1992; the Naismith Hall of Fame called in 1997.
