1988-89 Fleer #35 Lafayette Lever

About Lafayette Lever
Lafayette "Fat" Lever — the nickname came from his younger brother, who couldn't manage all the syllables in "Lafayette" — starred at Arizona State before the Portland Trail Blazers took him 11th overall in the 1982 NBA Draft. Two seasons in Portland gave little hint of what followed in Denver, where from 1984 to 1990 the 6'3" guard became one of the era's great stat-sheet stuffers: two All-Star nods (1988, 1990), All-NBA Second Team in 1986-87, All-Defensive Second Team in 1987-88, and 43 career triple-doubles, still 13th all-time. His 1988-89 line of 19.8 points, 9.3 rebounds and 7.9 assists per game came in the very season this card hit packs. Card #35 isn't his rookie — Lever was already a fixture by 1988 — but it catches him at his absolute peak. He wrapped up with Dallas in 1994 at 13.9 points, 6.0 boards and 6.2 assists across 752 games; the Nuggets retired his No. 12 in 2017.
