About Danny Schayes

Basketball bloodlines rarely run deeper. Danny Schayes is the son of Hall of Famer Dolph Schayes, and Basketball-Reference even lists 'Dolph' among his nicknames — a hand-me-down from his famous father. A 6'11" center from Syracuse, where he earned first-team All-Big East honors in 1981, Schayes went 13th overall to the Utah Jazz in the 1981 draft, then landed in Denver via a 1983 trade. Fleer #37 catches him at his peak: he posted career bests of 13.9 points and 8.2 rebounds per game in 1987-88, then averaged 12.8 and 6.6 during the 1988-89 season this card fronts. A consummate survivor, he stretched his career across 18 seasons and 1,138 games for seven franchises — Utah, Denver, Milwaukee, the Lakers, Phoenix, Miami and Orlando — retiring in 1999 with 8,780 points and 5,671 rebounds. It's not a rookie card; Schayes was already seven seasons deep, right in the middle of his best Denver run.
