1988-89 Fleer #8 Danny Ainge

About Danny Ainge
The ultimate multi-sport talent, Danny Ainge hit .220 as a Toronto Blue Jays infielder while starring at BYU, where his coast-to-coast layup sank Notre Dame in the 1981 NCAA tournament and he claimed that year's John R. Wooden Award. Boston drafted him 31st overall in 1981 and bought out his baseball contract after a legal battle. The combo guard started on the Celtics' 1984 and 1986 championship teams, drilled 148 three-pointers in 1987-88 to shatter the NBA's single-season record of 92, and made his lone All-Star appearance that season. This Fleer card — not his rookie — captures him as a Celtic just before the midseason 1988-89 trade to Sacramento; stops in Portland and Phoenix followed en route to 11,964 points across 14 seasons. Boston fans knew him next as "Trader Danny," the nickname he earned as the Celtics' bold, deal-making executive who built the 2008 championship team.
