About Dennis Johnson

A forklift driver out of high school before Harbor College and Pepperdine revived his game, Dennis Johnson slipped to the second round (29th overall) in 1976 — then led Seattle to its only NBA championship as 1979 Finals MVP. Three All-Star seasons in Phoenix (1980-83) followed before Red Auerbach dealt for him in 1983, and the defensive-stopper guard anchored Boston's 1984 and 1986 title teams. Sonics announcer Bob Blackburn coined "DJ" to tell him apart from teammates John and Vinnie Johnson, and the initials stuck through nine straight All-Defensive Team selections, five All-Star trips, and 15,535 career points. It's DJ who finished Larry Bird's famous 1987 steal against Detroit — "underneath to DJ, who lays it in!" — and Bird called him the best teammate he ever had. Card #10 is a late-career Celtics issue, not a rookie card; the Naismith Hall of Fame inducted him posthumously with the Class of 2010.
