About Kevin Williams
One of the set's great oddities: card #72 features Kevin Williams as a member of the Miami Heat, yet he never played a single game for the franchise. The Heat plucked the New York City guard from Seattle with the 11th pick of the June 1988 expansion draft, then released him on August 1 — months before their debut — but Fleer had already slotted him in as a Heat player. A St. John's product drafted 46th overall by San Antonio in 1983, Williams carved out five NBA seasons and 260 games as a backup guard with the Spurs, Cavaliers, SuperSonics, Nets, and Clippers, averaging 4.9 points and shooting 80.5 percent from the line. His best stretch came in Seattle, where he averaged 8.6 points across 14 games in the 1987 playoffs. He actually spent 1988-89 with New Jersey and the Clippers, and won a CBA title with the 1986 Tampa Bay Thrillers. It's his only Fleer card, though catalogs differ on his rookie-card status.
