About Winston Garland

Winston Garland's lone mainstream Fleer appearance doubles as his rookie card, and it catches him at his absolute peak. A product of Gary, Indiana's Roosevelt High — the program that also produced Dick Barnett and Glenn Robinson — Garland took the junior-college route through Southeastern CC before starring at Missouri State, earning 1987 AMCU Player of the Year honors and eventually having his No. 22 retired. Milwaukee spent the 40th pick of the 1987 draft on him, but Golden State is where he arrived: the 6-2 point guard started 62 games as a rookie, finished runner-up in Rookie of the Year voting, and posted the Warriors' first triple-double in five years. The 1988-89 season on this card was his best — 14.5 points and 6.4 assists per game, plus 13.4 a night in the playoffs. Garland played seven NBA seasons for five teams, totaling 4,799 points and 2,421 assists, won an Italian Cup with Benetton Treviso, and passed the position down to his son, NBA point guard Darius Garland.
