1988-89 Fleer #40 Joe Dumars

About Joe Dumars
Card #40 catches Joe Dumars at the perfect moment: the 1988-89 season ended with the quiet Piston averaging 17.2 points on .505 shooting and taking Finals MVP honors in Detroit's sweep of the Lakers for the franchise's first NBA title. Not a rookie card — Dumars was a fourth-year veteran here — but a cornerstone all the same. Out of McNeese State, where he finished as the NCAA's 11th all-time leading scorer, Detroit took him 18th overall in 1985, and he never wore another uniform: 14 seasons (1985-99) at shooting guard and later point guard, 16,401 points, six All-Star nods, four All-Defensive First Team selections, and back-to-back championships in 1989 and 1990. Teammate John Salley dubbed him 'The Silent Killer' — little noise, deadly results — and Michael Jordan called him the best defender he ever faced. The NBA's Sportsmanship Award now bears his name, and the Naismith Hall of Fame called in 2006.
