About Adrian Dantley

Fleer's #39 catches "The Teacher" in his last full Detroit season — no rookie card here, since Adrian Dantley had been schooling NBA defenders for more than a decade by 1988-89. A two-time consensus All-American at Notre Dame who helped end UCLA's 88-game win streak in 1974 and led the 1976 Olympic gold-medal team in scoring, Dantley went sixth overall to the Buffalo Braves and claimed 1976-77 Rookie of the Year. His peak came in Utah: two scoring titles (1981 and 1984), six All-Star trips, and two All-NBA Second Team nods, built on ruthless post footwork and endless free throws from an undersized 6'5" frame. Traded to Detroit in 1986 for Kelly Tripucka, the small forward helped turn the Pistons into a title contender — then was stunningly swapped to Dallas for Mark Aguirre in February 1989, months before Detroit won it all without him. He retired with 23,177 points (24.3 per game) and entered the Naismith Hall of Fame in 2008.
