About Maurice Cheeks

By the time Fleer issued card #86 in 1988-89, Maurice Cheeks was a decade into his Philadelphia run — this isn't his rookie card, just the veteran floor general in classic Sixers colors. A second-round steal out of West Texas State (36th overall, 1978), "Mo" — short for Maurice — took over the point immediately, starting all 82 games as a rookie. He quarterbacked Julius Erving and Moses Malone to the 1983 NBA title, made four All-Star teams (1983, 1986-88), and earned five All-Defensive selections, four of them First Team (1983-86). Across 15 seasons (1978-93) with the 76ers, Spurs, Knicks, Hawks, and Nets, he totaled 12,195 points, 7,392 assists, and 2,310 steals — the first player to reach 2,000 steals entirely in the NBA, and fifth all-time in assists when he retired. Philadelphia retired his No. 10, and the Naismith Hall of Fame called in 2018.
