1988-89 Fleer #87 Mike Gminski

About Mike Gminski
Duke fans knew Mike Gminski was different early — he graduated high school in three years, pioneering what's now called reclassifying, and won ACC co-Rookie of the Year honors as a 17-year-old freshman. He left Durham as the Blue Devils' all-time leader in points, rebounds, and blocked shots, the 1979 ACC Player of the Year, with his No. 43 headed for the rafters. Duke's student newspaper dubbed the tongue-twisting Gminski "G-Man," and the Nets — who drafted him seventh overall in 1980 — stitched it onto his warm-up suit. This isn't a rookie card; it catches the 6'11" center at his statistical peak, landing in Philadelphia midway through 1987-88 and answering with all 82 games in 1988-89 at a career-best 17.2 points plus 9.4 boards a night. Over 14 seasons with the Nets, Sixers, Hornets, and Bucks, he totaled 10,953 points and 6,480 rebounds while shooting 84.3% from the line — rare touch for a big man — before a long second act as a college basketball broadcaster.
