Fresh off leading North Carolina to the 1982 NCAA title alongside a freshman named Michael Jordan, Worthy went first overall to the Lakers in the 1982 draft — the only time a reigning champion has held the top pick. The goggled small forward spent all twelve seasons (1982–94) in purple and gold as Showtime's finisher, piling up seven straight All-Star selections (1986–92), three championships (1985, 1987, 1988), and 16,320 points at 17.6 per game across 926 contests. The 'Big Game James' nickname was earned honestly: his scoring rose 3.5 points a night in the playoffs, capped by a 36-point, 16-rebound, 10-assist Game 7 triple-double against Detroit that sealed the 1988 title and Finals MVP. This Fleer issue arrived that very fall — not a rookie card, but Worthy at his absolute peak. The Hall of Fame called in 2003, and No. 42 hangs in the Lakers' rafters.
