About Byron Scott
Fleer caught "Lord Byron" — a nickname begging to be used, his first name matching the English Romantic poet's — fresh off his finest season: 1987-88, when Scott led the champion Showtime Lakers in scoring at a career-best 21.7 points per game. An Inglewood kid from Morningside High, in the shadow of the Forum, he starred at Arizona State before San Diego took him fourth overall in 1983; the Clippers promptly dealt him to the Lakers for Norm Nixon. The 6-4 shooting guard manned the backcourt beside Magic Johnson for a decade (1983-93), winning three titles (1985, '87, '88), earning 1983-84 All-Rookie honors, and leading the NBA in three-point percentage (.433) in 1984-85. Stops in Indiana (1993-95) and Vancouver (1995-96) preceded a 1996-97 Laker farewell spent mentoring an 18-year-old rookie named Kobe Bryant — whom Scott would later coach. He retired with 15,097 points, then earned 2008 NBA Coach of the Year with New Orleans. Not a rookie card, but peak Showtime.
