A consensus first-team All-American who carried Purdue to the 1980 Final Four, 7-foot center Joe Barry Carroll went first overall in the 1980 draft — the pick Golden State infamously acquired by shipping Robert Parish and the choice that became Kevin McHale to Boston. Carroll produced from day one: All-Rookie First Team in 1980-81, a career-best 24.1 points per game in 1982-83, and a 1987 All-Star nod, yet critics dubbed the laid-back big man "Joe Barely Cares" for his perceived lack of effort. A 1984-85 detour to Italy's Simac Milano brought a league title and the Korać Cup before he returned to finish ten NBA seasons across the Warriors, Rockets, Nets, Nuggets and Suns — 12,455 points, 5,404 rebounds and 1,121 blocks in all. Fleer's #50 shows him in Houston, where the December 1987 Sleepy Floyd-Ralph Sampson trade landed him only briefly; by 1988-89 he was already a Net. Not a rookie card, but a tidy snapshot of one of the hobby's most debated No. 1 picks.
