About Bill White

Bill White signed with the New York Giants after a tryout for manager Leo Durocher and hit a home run in his first major-league at-bat on May 7, 1956. On March 25, 1959, he was traded along with Ray Jablonski to the St. Louis Cardinals, where he became a cornerstone first baseman for seven seasons, never hitting below .283 and topping .300 four times. An eight-time All-Star and seven-time Gold Glove winner, White helped St. Louis win the 1964 World Series and finished a 13-year career with a .286 average, 202 home runs, and 870 RBI. After retiring in 1969 he became a longtime Yankees broadcaster, and in 1989 he was named National League president, becoming the first Black man to lead a major professional sports league in America. His 1959 Topps card is a rookie-era issue from his final season with the Giants, just before the trade that launched his Cardinals career.
