About Orlando Cepeda

Orlando Cepeda, nicknamed "the Baby Bull" and "Peruchin" after his father Pedro "Perucho" Cepeda, a Puerto Rican baseball legend known as "the Bull," broke in with the San Francisco Giants in their first West Coast season and won the 1958 NL Rookie of the Year award unanimously, batting .312 with 25 home runs and a league-leading 38 doubles. An 11-time All-Star, Cepeda went on to lead the NL in home runs in 1961 and twice in RBIs, and in 1967 he won the NL MVP award unanimously with the pennant-winning Cardinals, one of only two players in league history (with Albert Pujols) to sweep both Rookie of the Year and MVP unanimously. He finished his career with 379 home runs, a .297 average, and a 1967 World Series championship, and was inducted into the Hall of Fame by the Veterans Committee in 1999, becoming only the second Puerto Rican player enshrined after Roberto Clemente. This 1959 Topps card shows him coming off his Rookie of the Year campaign.
