About Bill Skowron

Bill Skowron earned his lifelong nickname "Moose" as a child, when a haircut resembling Italian dictator Benito Mussolini's led friends to jokingly call him "Mussolini," which his family shortened. Skowron reached the New York Yankees in 1954 and became their full-time first baseman starting in 1958, developing into an eight-time All-Star and a middle-of-the-order power threat during New York's dynasty years. He was a key contributor on five World Series championship teams — four with the Yankees (1956, 1958, 1961, 1962) and a fifth with the Dodgers in 1963, ironically against his former club — batting .293 with 8 home runs and 29 RBI across eight career World Series appearances. Skowron's 1959 Topps card captures him in his prime Yankees years; he went on to play for the Dodgers, Senators, White Sox, and Angels before retiring in 1967 after a 14-season career built on clutch postseason hitting and steady power production from the cleanup spot.
