About Whitey Ford
Whitey Ford spent his entire 16-year Hall of Fame career with the New York Yankees, becoming the winningest pitcher in franchise history with 236 career wins. Nicknamed "the Chairman of the Board" by catcher Elston Howard for his cerebral, calculating approach on the mound, the 5-foot-10 left-hander led the American League in wins three times and in ERA twice. In 1961 he won both the Cy Young Award and World Series MVP, and he remains the all-time World Series leader in wins (10), games started (22), and strikeouts (94) across 11 Fall Classic appearances, part of six championship teams. A 10-time All-Star, Ford was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1974, the same summer his No. 16 became the first number retired for a Yankees pitcher, alongside teammate Mickey Mantle's induction. His 1959 Topps card captures him in the middle of his prime as the ace of the Yankees' pitching staff.
