About Yogi Berra

Lawrence "Yogi" Berra signed with the Yankees in 1943 and, after Navy service in World War II, debuted in the majors in September 1946. The stocky catcher went on to anchor New York's dynasty for parts of 19 seasons, all but the last with the Yankees. An 18-time All-Star, he won the AL MVP award three times (1951, 1954, 1955) and appeared in a record 14 World Series, winning 10 as a player -- more than anyone in history -- including catching Don Larsen's perfect game in the 1956 Series. He retired with 358 home runs, a .285 average, and 2,150 hits. His nickname came from a teenage friend, Jack Maguire, who thought he resembled a yoga practitioner they'd seen in a movie newsreel, and it stuck for life. Famous for his tangled sayings as much as his bat, Berra was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1972.

Variations & how to tell them apart

Venezuelan Parallel

Topps issued a partial parallel of the set for the Venezuelan market, printed on thinner card stock and credited "Impreso en Venezuela por Benco C.A." on the back. Hobby checklists most often list the run as cards 1-196, though sources disagree and the exact range has never been definitively documented. Venezuelan cards are far scarcer than their U.S. counterparts and usually surface with heavy wear; collectors treat them as a separate parallel, not part of the standard 572-card set.
