About Frank Robinson

Frank Robinson broke into pro ball with the Cincinnati Reds organization and debuted in the majors on April 17, 1956, immediately winning NL Rookie of the Year after hitting 38 home runs. An outfielder and first baseman, he starred for Cincinnati (1956-1965) before a trade to Baltimore, where he won the 1966 Triple Crown and AL MVP, becoming the only player to win MVP in both leagues (he also won NL MVP in 1961). He was a 14-time All-Star, won two World Series with the Orioles, and finished with 586 home runs and a .294 average. Known by the nicknames "The Judge" and "Pencils," he later became MLB's first Black manager, taking over the Cleveland Indians in 1975. Robinson was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1982. His 1959 Topps card (#435) captures him during his early Cincinnati peak, the year he hit .311 with 36 homers and 125 RBI.
