About Casey Stengel

Charles Dillon "Casey" Stengel (1890-1975) picked up his famous nickname from his hometown initials "K.C." (Kansas City), stenciled on his luggage during his playing days. A colorful outfielder from 1912-1925 who hit an inside-the-park home run in the 1923 World Series, Stengel became one of the most successful managers in baseball history at the helm of the New York Yankees from 1949-1960. Known as "the Ol' Perfessor" for his rambling, wit-laden "Stengelese" way of speaking, he led the Yankees to an unprecedented five consecutive World Series titles from 1949-1953, and to ten American League pennants and seven championships overall in his 12 years managing the club. The 1959 season marked a rare stumble, as the Yankees finished third — their first non-pennant finish under Stengel — before the club rebounded to reach the World Series again in 1960. Stengel later managed the expansion New York Mets and was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1966. His 1959 Topps card captures the tail end of the most dominant managerial run the sport had seen.
