1959 Topps #551 Fred Haney

About Fred Haney
Fred Haney (1896-1977) managed the Milwaukee Braves from mid-1956 through 1959, guiding a roster anchored by Hank Aaron, Eddie Mathews, and Warren Spahn to back-to-back National League pennants. In 1957, Haney's Braves defeated the New York Yankees in seven games to win the World Series, and Milwaukee repeated as NL champions in 1958 before losing a seven-game World Series rematch with New York. A former light-hitting third baseman who played eight seasons in the majors (1922-1929) and managed the lowly St. Louis Browns and Pittsburgh Pirates in earlier stints, the 5-foot-6 Haney found his greatest success in Milwaukee. His tenure ended after the 1959 season, when the Braves finished tied with the Los Angeles Dodgers for first place, then lost a best-of-three tiebreaker series in two straight games; Haney was dismissed as manager shortly afterward. His 1959 Topps card documents his final season at the helm of a Milwaukee club that had been an NL powerhouse for three straight years.
