About Warren Giles

Warren Crandall Giles began his half-century baseball career as club president of the Class B Moline Plowboys in 1919 after serving as a U.S. infantry officer in France during World War I. On Branch Rickey's recommendation, Cincinnati Reds owner Powel Crosley Jr. hired Giles as general manager in 1936; under his direction the Reds won the 1938 Executive of the Year honors, the 1939 NL pennant, and the 1940 World Series title. Giles succeeded Ford Frick as National League president on October 8, 1951, and led the league until 1969 — a tenure that saw the NL win 16 of 23 All-Star Games and 10 of 19 World Series, and encompassed the Braves' moves to Milwaukee and later Atlanta, the Dodgers' and Giants' shifts to California in 1957, and the 1962 expansion adding the Mets and Houston Colt .45s. Giles was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1979, the year he died. The National League Championship Series trophy is named in his honor, as is Minor League Baseball's Warren Giles Award for outstanding minor-league league presidents. His 1959 Topps card recognizes his role as a sitting league executive.

Variations & how to tell them apart

White Back / Gray Back Series 3 (cards 199-286)

Every card #199-286 exists with the reverse printed on white card stock OR gray card stock. Per PSA the GRAY back is the less common of the two (correcting the older "roughly equal" claim), but there is NO price differential (Beckett) — the difference is a scarcity/completeness point, not a value flag. The tint is on the reverse and is not reliably visible on a front scan.

  • White Back: Printed on white card stock — the more common Series 3 back.
  • Gray Back: Printed on gray card stock — the scarcer Series 3 back (PSA), but with no established price premium.

Graded population — a scarcity guide, not a price. Snapshot 2026-07-05. Half grades fold down for both graders (8.5→8); PSA qualified slabs (OC, ST, PD, MC and the like) are not counted. Totals are summed across each grader's listed variations.
