George Uhle - 1933 Goudey #100
1933 Goudey #100 George Uhle

About George Uhle
George Uhle, "The Bull," was a right-handed pitcher who broke in with his hometown Cleveland Indians in 1919 after a semipro tryout arranged by former big-leaguer Glenn Liebhardt. Over 17 major-league seasons with the Indians (1919-1928), Detroit Tigers (1929-1932), New York Giants (1933), and New York Yankees (1933-1934), Uhle went 200-166 with a 3.99 ERA and 1,135 strikeouts. He led the American League in wins twice, with 26 in 1923 and 27 in 1926, topping the AL in complete games both years and in innings pitched (318 1/3) in 1926, a season that also earned him a spot on The Sporting News' AL All-Star team. He helped Cleveland win the 1920 World Series, throwing three scoreless innings in relief. Uhle is also credited with originating the slider, reportedly while experimenting with grips in Detroit. Babe Ruth, who batted .336 against him but managed only 4 home runs in 110 at-bats, called Uhle the toughest pitcher he ever faced; in one famous at-bat Uhle intentionally walked Mark Koenig to pitch to Ruth with runners on and struck him out. By the time his 1933 Goudey card appeared, Uhle had already been dealt from Detroit to the Giants and then the Yankees, closing out his career as a swingman. He was never elected to the Hall of Fame.

Frequently asked questions
What is the 1933 Goudey George Uhle card?
It is card #100 of the 1933 Goudey (R319) Baseball set - the 240-card, 2-3/8 by 2-7/8 inch color-art set issued in 1933 with Big League Chewing Gum. It pictures George Uhle with the Detroit Tigers.
Is the 1933 Goudey George Uhle #100 a rookie card?
By modern catalog convention, yes. 1933 Goudey is treated as the hobby's first major nationally distributed gum set, so nearly every card in it carries the rookie-card (RC) designation - a modern label applied retroactively, since many of these players had earlier tobacco, caramel, or strip cards.
How many cards are in the 1933 Goudey set?
240 numbered cards, though collectors usually count 241 collectible cards because #6 Jimmy Dykes exists in an error and a corrected version. Only 239 numbers were in 1933 packs - #106 (Nap Lajoie) was printed in 1934 and issued by mail.
