About Vic Sorrell
Victor Garland Sorrell (1901-1972), a right-handed pitcher out of Morrisville, North Carolina, spent his entire ten-year major-league career with the Detroit Tigers (1928-1937), the club he broke in with on April 22, 1928. A Wake Forest man who had studied law, Sorrell wore eyeglasses on the mound - unusual for the era - and his bookish, soft-spoken manner earned him the nicknames "Professor," "Philosopher," and "Lawyer." His best season came in 1930, when he went 16-11 with a 3.86 ERA and ranked among the American League's ERA and shutout leaders; he finished his career 92-101 with a 4.43 ERA and 619 strikeouts. Early in his career he struck out Ty Cobb looking, prompting a heated protest from the legendary hitter that Sorrell reportedly took in stride. Though he pitched into the Tigers' pennant-winning 1934 and 1935 seasons, arm trouble kept him off both World Series rosters. After his playing days ended with the minor-league Bluefield Blue-Grays, Sorrell became head baseball coach at North Carolina State, guiding the Wolfpack for 21 seasons (1946-1966) and compiling a 223-196-5 record.
