About Tom Bridges

Tommy Bridges was a right-handed pitcher who spent his entire major-league career with the Detroit Tigers, debuting in 1930 after Tigers scout Billy Doyle signed him out of the Class C Middle Atlantic League. Renowned for one of the era's best curveballs despite a slight, 150-pound frame, Bridges won 20 or more games in three straight seasons (1934-36, peaking at 23 wins in 1936) and led the American League in strikeouts in both 1935 and 1936. He was a six-time All-Star (1934-37, 1939-40) and finished his career 194-138 with a 3.57 ERA and 1,674 strikeouts. On August 5, 1932, he retired the first 24 Washington Senators he faced before a two-out, ninth-inning single spoiled his bid for a perfect game. His signature moment came in Game 6 of the 1935 World Series, when he escaped a ninth-inning jam with the tying run on third to complete Detroit's first championship; manager Mickey Cochrane afterward called him "150 pounds of courage." Bridges is not in the Hall of Fame.

Frequently asked questions

What is the 1933 Goudey Tom Bridges card?

It is card #199 of the 1933 Goudey (R319) Baseball set - the 240-card, 2-3/8 by 2-7/8 inch color-art set issued in 1933 with Big League Chewing Gum. It pictures Tom Bridges with the Detroit Tigers.

Why does this card have no team banner?

It comes from Goudey's late-1933 press sheets 8-10, which dropped the team-name banner from the front design - 72 cards in the set share the bannerless look.

Is the 1933 Goudey Tom Bridges #199 a rookie card?

By modern catalog convention, yes. 1933 Goudey is treated as the hobby's first major nationally distributed gum set, so nearly every card in it carries the rookie-card (RC) designation - a modern label applied retroactively, since many of these players had earlier tobacco, caramel, or strip cards.

How many cards are in the 1933 Goudey set?

240 numbered cards, though collectors usually count 241 collectible cards because #6 Jimmy Dykes exists in an error and a corrected version. Only 239 numbers were in 1933 packs - #106 (Nap Lajoie) was printed in 1934 and issued by mail.
