1952 Topps #69 Virgil Stallcup
1952 Topps #69 Virgil Stallcup

About Virgil Stallcup
Thomas Virgil "Red" Stallcup was a right-handed shortstop from Honea Path, South Carolina, who reached the majors after being signed by the Boston Red Sox before World War II and then selected by the Cincinnati Reds in the Rule 5 draft following the 1946 season, when he batted .304 in the Class B Piedmont League. The lanky 6-foot-3 infielder debuted with Cincinnati in 1947 and served as the Reds' regular shortstop from 1948 through 1951, prized far more for his glove than his bat: he led National League shortstops in fielding percentage in 1949, 1950, and 1951. On May 13, 1952 he was traded with Dick Sisler to the St. Louis Cardinals for Wally Westlake and Eddie Kazak, and he made his final big-league appearance on April 25, 1953. Over seven seasons and 587 games he hit .241 with 22 home runs and 214 RBI, never topping .254 as a regular. On this 1952 Topps first-series card, #69 is found with both black-back and red-back printing variations.
