About Dick Sisler
Dick Sisler (November 2, 1920 – November 20, 1998) was a left-handed first baseman and outfielder, and the son of Hall of Famer George Sisler. After signing with the St. Louis Cardinals and serving in the Navy during World War II, he debuted in the majors on April 16, 1946. Over eight seasons with the Cardinals (1946–47, 1952–53), Philadelphia Phillies (1948–51), and Cincinnati Reds (1952), he batted .276 with 720 hits, 55 home runs, and 360 RBI across 799 games. His finest year came in 1950, when he made the National League All-Star team and, on the season's final day at Ebbets Field, hit a tenth-inning, three-run, opposite-field home run to beat the Brooklyn Dodgers and clinch the "Whiz Kids" Phillies' first pennant in 35 years — a blow his father, then a Dodgers scout, watched from the stands. Sisler later managed the Reds (1964–65, 121–94). This is his second-series card in the landmark 1952 Topps set.
