About Connie Marrero

Conrado Eugenio "Connie" Marrero (1911-2014) was a diminutive Cuban right-handed pitcher and one of the great characters of early-1950s baseball. Born in Sagua la Grande, he took up serious ball late, starring in the Cuban Amateur League beginning in 1938 with Cienfuegos, where he won well over 100 amateur games and threw two no-hitters. Signed by legendary scout Joe Cambria, he reached the majors with the Washington Senators as a 38-year-old rookie in 1950 and pitched five seasons (1950-1954), all in Washington. A crafty junkballer who lived on slow curves, sliders and knucklers rather than velocity, Marrero went 39-40 with a 3.67 ERA and 297 strikeouts, completing 51 of his 94 starts with seven shutouts. He tossed a one-hitter against Philadelphia in 1951 and led the Senators' staff with 11 wins that year, earning selection to the 1951 American League All-Star team, where at age 40 he was the oldest first-time All-Star to that point. Nicknamed "El Guajiro de Laberinto" (the peasant from Laberinto) and "El Curvo" for his signature curveball, Marrero was a beloved national figure in Cuba, where his Cuban League record reached 69-43. He lived to 102, and at his death he was the oldest living former major-league player.

Double Print

Marked DP. Roughly 50% more of these cards were printed than their neighbors (the hobby calls it 'double-printed'), so they are the most plentiful cards in the set. TCDB flags 103 of them, concentrated in the low series. Five cards normally in the low run - #94, #107, #131, #145 and #156 - were also printed on the more-plentiful #166-220 sheet. A print-quantity designation, not an error or a separate card.
