1953 Topps #133 Gil Coan

About Gil Coan
A speedy left-handed-hitting outfielder from Monroe, North Carolina, Gil Coan was signed in 1944 by scout Zinn Beck off a paper-mill semipro team in Brevard and tore through the minors: after debuting in Class D at Kingsport, he won the 1945 Southern Association batting title (.372, 201 hits) at Chattanooga and was named The Sporting News Minor League Player of the Year. He reached the Washington Senators in 1946 and played 11 big-league seasons (through 1956), later with the Baltimore Orioles, Chicago White Sox and New York Giants, mostly in left field. Prized for his legs after a childhood infection cost him most of his left thumb, Coan hit .500 (21-for-42) in limited 1947 duty, stole 23 bases in 1948, and enjoyed his best year in 1951 with a .303 average and career highs of 9 homers, 62 RBI and 85 runs; on April 21, 1951 he tied a record with two triples in one inning. He recorded the first hit in Orioles franchise history on April 11, 1954. A lifetime .254 hitter with 731 hits, 39 home runs, 278 RBI and 83 steals in 918 games, Coan was the oldest living former New York Giant when he died in 2020 at 97. This #133 card is known with the back biography printed in either black or white text, a minor series-two printing variation.
